Preparing For Change

Are you looking to make some healthy changes in your life? Maybe you’re hoping to finally lose those last 10 lbs! Or maybe your doctor has told you that you need to watch your blood sugar levels or that your blood pressure is a little high and you know you need to start making some healthier decisions.

Here are 3 exercises to help you create ACHIEVABLE goals to help get you started on the path to a healthier you!

1) Create a purpose for your goal. What does this mean?

Let’s evaluate:
What is the purpose of your resolution? Why do you want to do it? Is it because you think you should lose those extra 10-20lbs or quit smoking? Or do you want to? Are you ready to make the effort and put in the work? Because there will be work to do. And if you do want to, why?  Once your goal has a purpose, remember to focus on that purpose.

Examples:

  1. Wanting to have more energy vs. losing 20 lbs.
  2. Saving for a vacation this year vs. quitting smoking to save money.
  3. Being able to enjoy time with friends and family vs. not stressing/worrying all the time.

This serves as a more REALISTIC and POSITIVE motivator.

2) Set SMART goals. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-Focused, and Time-bound.

Approach your resolution with the same ambition you would approach a project at work.  Example: Goal to lose 10 lbs over 8 weeks at a rate of 1-2 lbs per week.

Next, create an action plan to describe how you will attain your goal. Be sure to take into account any roadblocks that you may experience. If you’re not a morning person, planning to exercise every morning before work may not be realistic for you.

Having an action plan lets you know what steps to take so that your realistically reach your goals.

3) Put a support system in place.

Many of us hold the notion that change is difficult. With a goal and a plan, change simply becomes a SERIES OF CHANGES to purposefully put one foot in front of the other moment by moment. This doesn’t mean that there won’t be temptations and stumbling blocks, so have a support team in place.

It can be your partner, but don’t force them into it 😉 Maybe they aren’t best suited for the task. It can be a friend, or even a network of friends or a mastermind type group.

But why not even kick it up a notch?! INVEST IN YOURSELF!  If your goals were business related, would you not invest in a business coach?
